Oral and IV Sedation
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is induced by taking small pills of a sedative drug. In approximately 60 minutes, relaxation begins and you feel deeply relaxed but are still conscious and responsive. You may go to sleep and generally have little memory of the experience. They are monitored to insure proper breathing and adequate oxygenation of the blood. You must be escorted by a caregiver and cannot drive for several hours or the rest of the day.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
IV sedation is a very controlled sedation done by an intravenous drip in the arm of a sedative drug. This is the most controllable technique as it can quickly and easily be adjusted to the your body type, tolerance levels and depth of sedation desired. This technique produces the deepest sedation and relaxation. Although you are responsive, you have very little, if any, memory of the experience. Although the procedure and drugs are very safe, patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen level, carbon monoxide levels, breathing and heart electrical activity (EKG) are monitored as part of our safe standard of care. Patients are restricted to limited activities and may not drive for the rest of the day.
An escort is required to drive you to and from the office if you will be receiving Oral and/or IV Conscious Sedation for your procedure. We appreciate your escort staying in our office while you are having your procedure completed.
